Garden Education - Christmas Workshop
Our Horticulture and Sustainable Food Systems programme looks at the range of processes that are involved in growing food, and the many journeys taken to get to our plate. We provide opportunities for young people aged five to 18 to engage in the world of growing food in our organic garden and on the wider Dumfries House Estate. This festive season we have two workshops on offer, to suit all stages of Primary education.
Grow, Christmas Tree! – Early Primary Stage – Half day workshop with free time - 10am until 2pm
Not only green in summer's heat, but also winter's snow and sleet. Despite the December chill, the Dumfries House Education Garden is always a place of activity. Come and explore the season at Dumfries House, learning what it takes, throughout the year, to keep the plants growing. We will explore the lifecycle of a tree from cone to Christmas, and make some decorations that will grow at home!
Sprout for Joy! - Late Primary Stage – Half Day Workshop with Free Time - 10am until 2pm
It's time to turn away from the turkey and celebrate the secret stars of the Christmas dinner. In this half day workshop we'll get to cook some surprising savoury and sweet dishes with some of the less loved vegetables on the Christmas platter. We'll explore their flavours in new ways, think about why they appear in our kitchens at this time of year, and look for the healthy goodness hidden in our winter feast.
Our school education workshops support the delivery of The Curriculum For Excellence, and many of our activities are based outdoors on our 2,000 acre estate, making use of our natural spaces to inspire learning. The King’s Foundation works in harmony with the natural world, and as such our workshops also touch upon the UN Sustainable Development goals and support learning for sustainability. Please see below for all workshop details.
