Textiles Summer Family Workshops
Make, Mend and Weave: Summer Textile Workshops
Join us this summer for our “Make, Mend and Weave” workshop series – a hands-on programme designed to inspire creativity, build practical skills and encourage a more thoughtful approach to textiles.
We’re pleased to share that our workshop prices have been reduced this summer in line with the Government’s initiative to support families with the cost of activities. Each 3-hour workshop is priced at £26.25 per child, with no charge for accompanying adults.
Children aged 12 and over may attend independently, while those under 12 must be accompanied by an adult. However, we warmly encourage parents and carers to take part alongside their children, no matter their age, creating an opportunity to learn new skills and spend time together. Adults cannot attend this workshop alone.
Workshops include:
Lined Purse Workshop
A beginner-friendly introduction to sewing, where participants will create a fully lined purse using donated fabric scraps. Families will explore key skills such as using a sewing machine, sewing accurate seams and finishing techniques, while discovering how even small materials can be transformed into something both useful and beautiful.
Visible Mending & Embroidery
This creative session introduces the art of visible mending, using hand-stitching, patching and simple embroidery to repair and reimagine textiles. Participants will learn how to turn repairs into decorative features, giving fabrics a new life and embracing a more sustainable approach to clothing.
Passementerie & Board Weaving
Discover the traditional craft of decorative trim-making in this engaging workshop. Participants will experiment with colour and texture through passementerie-inspired techniques before exploring board weaving and pattern structures, gaining insight into heritage textile skills and their relevance today.
Each workshop is inspired by the principles of "harmony", encouraging participants to value materials, embrace creativity and reconnect with the process of making by hand.
Important: Accessibility
Please note that workshops take place in our textile atelier, located in the attic of Dumfries House. Access is via 89 steps, and due to the historic nature of the building, there is no lift available.
