Get creative together in this fun, beginner-friendly workshop where parent and child will team up to design and sew a unique patchwork tote bag using donated fabric scraps. Guided by our expert tutors, you'll learn essential sewing skills—from threading and using a sewing machine to sewing precise seam allowances, pressing fabric, and adding neat, professional-looking topstitching. Along the way, we’ll also explore the value of sustainability in fashion, discovering how upcycling materials can help reduce waste. By the end of the session, you’ll head home with a beautiful handmade tote bag—and a shared sense of achievement and confidence in your sewing skills.

Please note: This workshop takes place in our Atelier, which is on the top floor of Dumfries House, and is accessed via 89 steps. We do not have an elevator.

Enjoy a relaxed and creative parent-and-child workshop where you’ll learn hand-stitching and decorative repair techniques such as sashiko, patching, and embroidery—without the worry of working on your own clothes. Using pre-damaged or marked fabric samples provided on the day, you’ll be free to practise, play, and experiment at your own pace. It's a perfect opportunity to build confidence, develop new skills together, and leave feeling inspired to breathe new life into your clothes at home.

Step into the world of Scottish textiles in this hands-on parent-and-child workshop, where you’ll be guided to design and weave your very own tartan using soft wool yarns inspired by the rich seasonal colours of the Dumfries House Walled Garden. Using a simple wrapped board technique, you’ll explore the fundamentals of weaving and create a beautiful herringbone pattern—a classic design deeply rooted in Scotland’s textile heritage. You’ll also have the chance to try your hand at weaving on a table loom, making this a fun and memorable introduction to the craft for all ages.
