Farming and Rural Skills
Our Farm to Fork offering focuses on experiential hands-on learning on our rare breeds farm at Dumfries House estate.
An understanding of animal welfare and sustainable farming practice links develops knowledge of food production systems and how to eat well.
Course Options

Our day visit programme for schools is offered on a seasonal cycle with opportunities to spend time with the various animals including cows, sheep, geese, ducks, turkeys, hens and pigs.
Pupils will be able to understand where their food comes as well as how the by-products, such as wool, are used.
Pupils will develop a sense of empathy as they spend time with the animals and many pupils find the experience positive for their mental wellbeing as they develop an understanding of our senses and how we interact with and react to the world around us.
Our school education workshops support the delivery of The Curriculum for Excellence, and many of our activities are based outdoors on our 2000 acre estate, making use of our natural spaces to inspire learning. The King's Foundation works in harmony with the natural world, and as such our workshops also touch upon the UN Sustainable Development goals and support learning for sustainability.

Our farm education activity takes pupils from Primary 1 through to upper secondary school and develops an understanding of the food production system and good practice in farming. Workshops are contextualised by age and range from the opportunity to view an egg in development to handling new-born chicks or focusing on one particular industry such as dairy or beef farming.
Secondary pupils with an interest in rural skills are able to gain a greater understanding of animal husbandry and welfare beyond that available in school to enhance their skills and knowledge. We place great importance in sustainable farming practice to ensure that pupils who take part in our workshops develop an understanding of the issues the planet currently faces in producing food for an expanding population without detriment to the planet.

Our Farm and Garden workshops teach children how growing plants and caring for animals are closely linked — and how both play a vital role in supporting our planet. Open to children of all primary ages, these engaging sessions explore everything from growing fruit and vegetables in the garden to looking after farm animals, helping students understand where their food comes from and how farmers and gardeners alike, work with nature.
Rooted in His Majesty The King's Harmony in Nature philosophy, our workshops highlight regenerative and sustainable practices, encouraging children to develop good habits they can carry forward and share with others.
